About the Artist

    A few years ago, I sketched a pencil portrait of my husband that was almost identical to the photo I’d used as a guide. Drawing was a hobby that had been on the back burner for a very long time. That was the beginning of my serious art journey – sketching whatever was in front of me – chairs, lamps, houseplants, trees. And I loved every minute of it. I bought canvasses, brushes, paints and an easel, then covered the furniture in our home office with old sheets to create my “studio.” I quickly learned that creating good art is more than a whim.

   Professionally, I received a BA in Communications Studies from UNC-Chapel Hill, but after decades of working behind the scenes in radio, advertising, and broadcast TV, the time came for me to do something that appealed to my spirit. I am intrigued by the power that art evokes through its beauty, its simple complexities, its calls for action, its push towards reflection.

   Today, I am a self-taught painter whose work has largely been inspired by my photos from road trips to those taken in my own back yard as a guide to create scenes that enhance the particular slice of nature that moves me. I use acrylic on canvas or heavy paper to create stunning landscapes that showcase the beauties of nature that we so easily take for granted. I also use my imagination to create abstracts that are not only eye-catching but thought provoking. In doing so, I am not intentional about adhering to specific themes, styles or current trends. Art is everywhere and in everything, so my choices are often derived from taking my eyes off the road and allowing my chosen subjects to appeal to me in their own special way. It's fun, calming, rejuvenating, and exhilarating to pursue a venture that tests talent, creates beauty, and ignites conversation.

     A local artist and gallery owner who saw samples of my work suggested that I join FALC (Fine Arts League of Cary) to meet and learn from other artists, to learn how to exhibit, and to explore venues for selling my art. I have since been included in a few of their exhibitions and have completed two commissioned works. 

     Practice, experimenting, and more practice has helped me create inspirational and ornamental strokes of color that remind me of these lines from the Folliot Pierpont hymn:

                                                                            “For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies,                                                                                                                                                      For the love from which our birth, over and around us lies."
